Covid-19 in the Light of the Shadows

There are many ways to look at what has happened and what is happening with us and to us as reality change caused by the ways we and the authorities respond to the virus challenges.

And as always, the way we look determines what we are able and not able to see.

This little piece of wisdom is widely ignored, denied, or underestimated. Just because we don’t see something doesn’t mean it’s not there. But so often in our vain negligence, we believe something isn’t there, although it is.

And that blindness has been called “Shadow” by its term coiler, Dr. Carl Gustav Jung.

Jung’s brilliant observations and discoveries opened a whole new level of looking for many who cared to dive into his teachings. I was and am one of them. I pride myself to honor Jung’s life work by contributing to the Shadow-awareness through my work, especially through my Shadow & Light Retreat.

The global pandemic we are all experiencing is one gigantic shadow that has shown its face in inescapable dominance. It can be seen like we as individuals and as a society needed – by force – to be made aware that we are not seeing something essential.

Dr. Jung says: “The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside as fate. That is to say, when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must by force act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves.”

‘Fate’ had it that we are now pressured to look. But again, we only will see what our looking allows.

If you look from the desire to get back to the pre-corona reality you compare what is with what was and probably putting your energy into re-establishing who you were before and how your life was before. If you succeed in that, you keep blind to the Shadow. And by the inevitable nature of the Shadow, it will find another, even more, powerful way to force you to see what you are resisting to see.

On the other hand, if you look from the passionate humility to learn what the message of the Shadow is, then you can expect seeing things you haven’t been aware of – and that is the whole purpose of the Shadow: it wants us to grow and it pushes us towards a greater and lighter version of ourselves.

Anyone who fully gets the message of the Shadow and accepts it – which means change – is redeemed from the drama of the same Shadow coming back ever more ferocious.

A short cut is to actively seek the Shadow and its other brothers and sisters and transform them by pulling them into the Light. That is called ‘shadow work’. Why it is not so popular is because no one wants to go into the underworld and face the tests that await us there.

Every true story of the ancient heroines and heroes (e.g. Herakles, Odysseus, etc.) and contemporary masters show us the same pattern: “in the darkness, there shall you find the light”.

What is the message of the Covid-19 Shadow to you?

What is it you are still not seeing (because you avoid looking)?

And are you accepting what you are seeing (meaning you change)?

Will your post-corona reality be a modified version of your pre-corona reality, or have you gotten the message, changed, and emerging like the phoenix more powerful, lighter, more loving, and lovable?

P.S.: if your Shadows are intense, know this: the darker the shadows, the brighter the light must be too.

With love, Marc
